The student who wishes to acquire an elementary knowledge of philosophy will find it both easier and more profitable to read some of the works of the great philosophers than to attempt to derive an all-round view from handbooks. 철학의 기초 지식을 얻고 싶은 학생은 개설서에서 전반적인 견해를 얻으려 하기보다 위대한 철학자들의 저작 몇 권을 읽는 것이 더 쉽고 더 유익하다는 것을 알게 될 것이다. handbooks: 개설서, 안내서.
Republic: 국가. 정의로운 나라와 영혼을 다룬 플라톤의 대화편으로, 6권과 7권에는 선의 이데아와 동굴의 비유가 나온다.
Meditations: 성찰. 방법적 회의에서 출발해 ‘나는 생각한다’의 확실성에 이르는 데카르트의 대표작이다. 『명상록』이라고도 옮긴다.
Ethics: 에티카. 신과 자연과 인간 정신을 기하학처럼 정의와 공리에서 증명해 나간 스피노자의 주저다.
The Monadology: 모나드론. 세계가 모나드라는 단순한 실체들로 이루어졌다는 라이프니츠의 짧은 저작이다.
Enquiry concerning Human Understanding: 인간 지성에 관한 탐구. 인과 관계와 귀납에 대한 회의를 담은 흄의 저작이다.
Prolegomena to any Future Metaphysic: 형이상학 서설. 원제는 ‘학문으로 등장할 수 있는 모든 미래 형이상학을 위한 서설’로, 『순수이성비판』의 내용을 쉽게 풀어 쓴 칸트의 저작이다.
